History

The Beginning
Horst Birkholz and his wife Doris founded Birkholz Homes in 1968 after moving from Chilliwack, British Columbia to Edmonton. As the company’s only full-time employees, the couple did most of the work themselves, hiring subtrades when needed. The company, originally called Birkholz Construction, became known for its high standards of excellence and attention to detail.

Growing Success
Throughout the 1970s, Birkholz built home styles that were popular for that time. These included bungalows and bi-levels ranging from 1,000 to 1,200 square feet. The company built about 100 homes a year, and it continued to do top-notch work: every home featured handmade kitchen cupboards and interior finishes. With the 1980s, there came great highs but also the unavoidable economic slump. Birkholz saw the opportunity in this downturn, and the company began to focus more on custom built homes. This move marked the beginning of a new chapter in the Birkholz story.

A Vision for the Future
In 1998, Horst handed the reins of Birkholz Homes over to his son Kevin, who represented the next generation taking on the key leadership role. Kevin and his wife, Penny, have injected a fresh perspective into the heritage of quality and craftsmanship established by his father. By focusing on a controlled-growth strategy, Birkholz is able to provide personal service and innovative design to the discerning client, while building only 10 to 12 exclusive luxury homes per year.
